Heavy fuel oil is a residual fuel obtained from the heaviest fractions of crude oil refining. Dense and viscous, it offers a high energy content and is generally heated before use.
It is mainly used in thermal power plants, industrial boilers and large marine engines. Its main characteristics (viscosity, density, sulphur content, flash point) are defined by recognised standards and confirmed for each cargo.
