Liquefied petroleum gas is a mixture of light hydrocarbons, mainly butane and propane, produced by crude oil refining and natural gas processing. Stored in liquid form under moderate pressure, it is easy to transport in cylinders or in bulk.
Commercial butane is valued for its versatility: it is used for cooking and heating in households as well as in many commercial and industrial processes. Its composition and vapour pressure are governed by recognised specifications.
